課程概述

This year-long course teaches students to write academic research papers. The first semester focuses on smaller tasks related to research paper writing, including summaries, reviews, and rhetorical arguments. While practicing these skills, students will also hone their written English into a better style with in-class exercises and writing workshops. Moreover, students will learn to appreciate the choices made in any writing process and become able to choose wisely.

課程目標
1.Students will develop the essential skills for writing academic research papers.
2.Students will learn to distinguish between good and bad styles and to correct bad writing of other people and of their own.
3.Students will craft original, persuasive arguments.

課程要求
Requirements
Participation: Students are required to come to class prepared to discuss the assigned reading and other students’ writing and actively participate in class discussion and writing workshops. The participation grade will be based on peer evaluation.

Oral Report: Each student will do a 15-minute oral report on a chapter of Style. When students enrolled outnumber chapters available, there will be joint presentations. Schedule of the oral report will be set up in the first class.

Summaries: Students will write two summaries. These are short essays (250 words each) presenting main ideas found in articles of the students’ own choice, without personal commentary.

Article Reviews: Students will write two article reviews (350 words each) to evaluate arguments presented in articles of their own choice.

Arguments: Students will write two rhetorical argument essays, each presenting a persuasive argument in about 750 words.

Book Review: Towards the end of the course, students will write a book review of 500 words. This final work of the semester should demonstrate that students have integrated the skills acquired and will account for 15% of the final grade.

Grades
Participation: 20%
Oral Report: 5%
Summaries: 16% (2*8)
Article Reviews: 18% (2*)
Arguments: 26% (2*13)
Book Review: 15%

Course Policy
1. Attendance: Two unexcused absences will be tolerated. Each absence after that will lower the final grade by a third of a letter.

2. Submission & Late Work: All assignments should be submitted to the course website on CEIBA, due on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The grade of a late paper will be lowered by 10% each day for three days and will not be accepted afterwards. For example, if a summary is submitted on Thursday (two days late) and its original score is 7 out of 8, it will receive a reduced grade of 5.4 [=7-(8*20%)].

3. Draft vs. Final: All paper assignments will go through in-class writing workshops and be revised by the author before final submission for grading. Only final versions of the assignments will be graded. Drafts will be marked by pass or fail. However, even though drafts do not contribute to the final grade, failure to submit a draft will lead to a 15% reduction of the assignment grade.

4. Plagiarism: Presenting someone else’s work as one’s own will be strictly punished. Depending on the range and seriousness of plagiarism, students may be asked to resubmit and receive the lowest passing mark for the assignment, or get 0 points for the plagiarized work.

5. Individual Conference: There are two individual conferences to address each student’s particular problems or needs. Whenever necessary, students are welcomed to set up other meetings with the instructor during the semester.
